Exceptional grants are processed through a Presbyterian minister and the relevant information concerning an application is set out below:

 

Who is Eligible?

Any family, in circumstances of need, are eligible.  The family may or may not be currently receiving assistance from the Society.  Circumstances of need may vary considerably.  The following examples of circumstances of need are for guidance only:

·         education expenses

·         funeral expenses

·         basic clothing/furnishings

·         repayment of debts

·         general household expenditure

 

How an application is made

The minister will notify the Society that an exceptional grant is required.

Any application for an exceptional grant must be made in writing on the ‘Exceptional Grant’ application form.

The completed application form will be examined and assessed by the Secretary of the Society and, if approved, an exceptional grant cheque will be authorised.

Level of payment

The amount of exceptional grant payment will be decided by the Secretary.  The level of any single exceptional grant is usually £300.00.  In very exceptional situations this may be £500.00.

 

Payment of Exceptional Grant

The Society has discretion to decide how to pay an exceptional grant in any particular case.  However, the reasonable needs of the applicant, will be taken into account in the method of payment.


All cheques are normally made out to the applicant, forwarded through the minister, and crossed “Account Payee”.
